Mit 47.000 km² ist Niedersachsen das zweitgrößte Bundesland Deutschlands und zieht sich von der Nordsee bis in den Harz. In Niedersachsen nimmt die Burgendichte gen Norden immer mehr ab. Es gibt ganze Landstriche, in denen bisher keine Burg gefunden wurde. Das flache Land bot meist nur Platz für Flachland- und Wasserburgen. In späterer Zeit entstanden hier prächtige Schlösser und Herrensitze.
Im Süden wird Niedersachsen hügelig. Die Burgen werden größer, eindrucksvoller und herrschaftlicher. Sehenswert sind die Burgen des Harzes und vereinzelt kulturhistorische Perlen wie z.B. die Kaiserpfalz in Goslar.
